The Lifelong Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Your Cat

Feb 3, 2026 | Education

A Healthier Start for Every Cat at Caring for Cats

At Caring for Cats, every kitten and cat who comes through our doors receives the love, medical care, and attention they need to grow and thrive. One of the most important ways we show that love is by ensuring every kitty is spayed or neutered before heading to their forever home.

This step is not optional. It is foundational.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to improve a cat’s long-term health, reduce suffering, and prevent overpopulation in our community.

What Spay and Neuter Does for a Cat’s Health

Spaying and neutering are safe, routine veterinary procedures that provide lifelong benefits.

For female cats, spaying significantly reduces the risk of uterine infections and mammary tumors, which can be cancerous. For male cats, neutering reduces the risk of certain infections and reproductive cancers.

There are important behavioral benefits as well. Cats who are spayed or neutered are typically calmer and less likely to roam, spray, or engage in aggressive behavior. Contrary to common myths, the procedure itself does not cause weight gain. Weight changes are related to diet and activity level, both of which can be managed with proper care.

Simply put, spaying and neutering helps cats live longer, healthier lives.

Preventing Unwanted Litters and Kitten Season

Beyond individual health benefits, spaying and neutering plays a critical role in reducing pet overpopulation.

Unplanned litters contribute to the ongoing challenge shelters face during “kitten season,” when stray and surrendered kittens arrive in overwhelming numbers. By preventing unwanted litters, we reduce strain on rescue resources and increase the likelihood that every cat receives the care and placement they deserve.

When one cat is spayed or neutered, the impact reaches far beyond that individual animal.

Our Commitment at Caring for Cats

In 2025, Caring for Cats provided spay and neuter services to every cat who needs one before they are eligible for adoption. Each spay costs approximately $415, and each neuter costs approximately $250.

These costs are significant, but we believe this step is essential to responsible rescue work.

By ensuring every cat is altered before adoption, we give them the healthiest possible start and help prevent future overpopulation in our community. It is part of our commitment to providing gold-standard care and long-term well-being.
