Channel Your Inner Feline for Career and Life Success
We at Caring for Cats occasionally receive questions from our Facebook followers or from newsletter recipients, and we trust our own Dear Tabby to provide a thoughtful response. We thought we’d share a recent exchange in case any of you can relate.
Dear Tabby: I think I have read every leadership and management self-help book available, but I can’t find one that really inspires me to be a better worker. I need some tips to improve my performance. Can you help?

Dear Mediocre: Don’t sell yourself short. I’m sure you are better than a mediocre performer, but I believe we can all improve, and I think cats can help inspire everyone to excel at work. You just need to find the cat breed to emulate in the workplace. Let me give you some examples to see if this helps.
Are you too shy to speak up at meetings, so your co-workers don’t hear all your great ideas? The solution may be to channel your inner Siamese. Talk, talk, talk. All the time. And if no one is paying attention, then just talk louder and longer.
Or maybe it’s your outdated sense of office style that is impeding your progress. Remember, nylons and shoulder pads have long been banished. Be like a tuxedo cat. A black suit is always fashionable when paired with a crisp white blouse.
Is your work good but too slow? Channel your inner kitten. Pounce on that new assignment! Chase that red dot of praise from your manager as you work like a kitten with catnip-fueled zoomies.
Do your co-workers sense your stress? If you are anxious or prone to micromanagement, you may not be on the fast track to getting that promotion. Take your cue from the cool and cuddly Ragdoll. Relax. Be agile. Your co-workers will be drawn to your calm confidence.
Already a manager struggling with conflict? Channel the confident, assertive Tortoiseshell. Dig deep and find your inner tortie!
Since you are a cat lover, we know you’re intelligent and independent. Neediness is for dogs (with all due respect). Be the breed you want to be, and I am sure you will succeed.
