Special Home for a Special Kitty

May 2, 2024 | Success Stories

Recently we’ve had some wonderful special needs kitties at the shelter, and some have already found their purrfect families.

One of those cats is Leaf, who has a condition called swimmer syndrome that affects her back legs. Swimmer syndrome is a rare developmental condition in kittens that causes the back legs to splay out to the sides, making it difficult to stand or walk normally. With early intervention such as physical therapy, supportive bandaging, and strengthening exercises many kittens recover remarkably well and go on to live happy, active lives. It does not affect their personality, intelligence, or ability to give and receive love.

Leaf’s new mom is a CFC volunteer and she recently gave us this amazing report, and we just had to share it with you:

Leaf is doing great! (I decided to keep her name—it’s just so cute!) My resident cat is in love with her and always wants to be with her while she is still coming around to him. They love to run around and chase each other while playing with toys. Leaf’s favorite toys are all and any! Having a disability hasn’t slowed her down at all.

When I come home and sit on the couch, instead of using her stairs, she gets so excited she just pulls herself up with her front legs to come say hi. She is a very hungry girl and will always let me know when it’s time to eat! Sometimes when I’m not looking she even tries to steal a bite of my food. I am so happy Leaf is in my life, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of her life together!

If you have adopted a cat from Caring for Cats, we would love an update! Send us your pictures and updates on Facebook or Instagram.
