When a new beginning comes with uncertainty.

When Jane arrived at Caring For Cats, she brought with her soft eyes and a gentle presence. It was only later that we would learn she also carried a serious medical diagnosis, one that might have caused others to pass her by.

In August, Jane was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer called cutaneous hemangiosarcoma. Thanks to quick action by our healthcare team, extensive testing showed no signs that the cancer had spread. Surgery was recommended to remove the affected area and give Jane her best chance at a healthy future.

After her surgery, Jane spent time in a temporary foster home where she could rest, heal, and recover quietly. Her surgery was successful, but as with many cancer diagnoses, there are no guarantees. There is always a chance of recurrence, and that uncertainty can make adoption feel daunting.

That’s where the Caring for Cats Together Furever Program comes in.

In mid-December, a woman came to the shelter for an adoption appointment. She spent a thoughtful, intentional hour getting to know several cats. She asked careful questions. She listened closely. And little by little, Jane emerged as the front-runner.

We had a very honest conversation about Jane’s medical history, her cancer diagnosis, and what signs to watch for in the future. We also shared something just as important: reassurance. Through the Together Furever Program, Caring For Cats can help cover future cancer-related medical costs if Jane ever needs them again.

That support changes everything.

For cats like Jane, donor-funded programs like Together Furever are the bridge between “what if” and “welcome home.” Without this support, cats with medical histories often wait longer, or may never be adopted at all. With it, adopters can lead with love instead of fear.
